A Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde - Robert Louis Stevenson
Rating: 5/10
I was debating giving this book a 4/10 but decided that considering that it’s one of the most well known books in classical literature history and greatly influenced the study of psychology, I decided that I could push to a 5.
I really wasn’t a fan of this book, purely because I feel like nothing happened. Based on its size (it’s really skinny) I wasn’t expecting a huge plot or eccentric storyline, but I was expecting some kind of cliffhanger or shock reveal, neither of which I experienced.
The novel was published in 1886 and is written from the perspective of Mr Utterson, a lawyer and old friend of Dr Henry Jekyll. The novel introduces the character of Mr Hyde; a hideous, demonic, purely evil character who commits a hideous crime. Mr Utterson is shocked to find that Mr Hyde is in Dr Jekyll’s will as the sole inheritor of all Jekyll’s belongings and raises his queries to the Dr as to his motives and thinking behind his interaction with the criminal Mr Hyde. This interest of Utterson’s extended beyond asking questions to the Dr and decides to dig deeper into the connection, but will he be happy at the horrors he unearths…?
Overall the book was fine, it was a pleasurable read that I got through in a day without any fuss, but I just felt so unfulfilled when I’d finished the book. I didn’t even realised I’d finished the book till halfway through a chapter called ‘The Bottled Imp’ when I realised that it was a whole separate story to the one on the front of the cover! I was genuinely disappointed with this book as I had such high hopes for it being a gripping gothic thriller but for me turned out to be a drooping disappointment.
I know all of my reviews are my personal opinion and I will never say ‘don’t read this book’ because I always believe it to be down to you guys to make up your own minds about texts. So go ahead and read Jekyll and Hyde, the language in it is very advanced and will broaden your horizons in that sense, but in terms of suspense and excitement maybe attack it with fewer expectations than I did! But I’ll let you make your own minds up about this one, what do you guys think, am I being too harsh?
